Blue, continued ...

blue_ice

Every morning I fix myself a plastic jug full of sweet ice tea, to take to work for breaks and lunch. On Oct. 7, I pulled the ice trays out of the freezer and got a big surprise in a teensy size.

Would it be physics or chemistry where I could find an explanation for those frozen peaks?

Looks like the water was trying to rise for the occasion. LOL I have no idea what causes ice to I guess spew like that. I will be checking back on your blog just in case someone has the answer.

Lynette... on my blog, yes the building was damaged from a hurricane. If you know the area, we stayed beside Sea n Suds at Seawind Condo and this building and pier was in walking distance from there.

Lynette, leave your email address on my blog and I will send you some pictures of that beach. As soon as I see your email address I will delete it off my blog.

I thought I had the answer, but then I noticed that you said it was on 10/7, too early for Hallowe'en. But they do look like two emerging ice witch hats, don't they? OK, I'll shut up now.

I love iced tea ever since I had it when I lived in Louisiana. Every summer I would have a big jug of sweeten iced tea in the fridge. But then this past summer, I decided to cut down on my sugar intake and iced tea just isn't iced tea without the tons of sugar in it. :-(

Cool photo. And I don't know why the ice cubes have peaks like those. I get them sometimes.

I have not seen things like this before and really do not know what it is called.

However, in both peaks you can see tiny bubbles rising to the top. As they rise up they displace water. The water freezes around the bubble and forms the peak. If you look you can see them.

I am guessing it is something in your water that is causing the bubbles. We use filtered water so the cubes have no bubbles in it like those from a faucet.

Thanks for stopping at my blogs and for your comments there. I appreciate it a lot.

Only a good southern girl would take sweet tea to work. lol. Nice picture of the ice tray but I have no idea what happened.

Cool shot. Dunno the answer but I like the picture.

Write a note to a science museum. At some there are people who will answer you.

Great photo. I too have seen odd shapes in our ice cube tray at times.

Thanks for visiting my NorthBayPhoto blog.

Sorry forgot to answer your question about the boat restaurant in my blog. No I haven't eaten at this place but I have heard that it quite nice.

Wow! I like that you had the sense to take a picture. I would have been like "oh, crazy ice" and broken it up.

OK - this is my GUESS......water freezes in an ice tray from the outside of the hollow towards the center. As the water freezes it expands pushing up the water.

I do think they look like witch's hats and that if it was Halloween when you took this picture that would be the explanation :)

Definitely some impurity got into your water/ice cubes to be ;-)
But it doesn't take much to spur our imagination, does it? Witch's hats are my favorite, too!

I don't know the answer, but the effect is very pretty.

It seems you like blue color because you have posted several blue things.

You could find an explanation under Physics. You can post your question on this forum:
http://physicsforums.com/
On that website, go to
Physics->General Physics

I don't have an answer but it makes me think of the old show Pee Wee's Playhouse. All the food in the freezer & frig were animated and would run around and play games. Maybe your frozen food is having a party and making tools with the ice cubes to chip their way out?

I think there's something in physics about heavy water but I don't think it clumps up making bumps.

Is it sparkling water your using for your tea? I think this is a great mission for Flat Stanley to investigate!!
