Mother's Day afternoon, walking along enjoying the iPod the guys gave me, I noticed a word on the curb that surprised me enough that I had to turn around and go back to see if I'd read what I thought I'd read. Yep, Arnold. I turned and looked diagonally across the street and read the street signs.
I was on the corner of SE 37th and SE Grant Court, not SE 37th and E. Arnold Street. Hmmmm. A mystery, to be sure--why and when the name change? A quick check of Google turned up nothing. I wonder if I'll find other such mysteries on walks around Portland? Or if someone who knows something about this will make a comment to enlighten us?

Loved to see the Studebaker; it's incredible, but I still remember as if it was yesterday: in the late 50s there was a neighbour who owned a studebaker - the dream car for all the kids in the neighbourhood... ;)

Thats funny, wonder if old maps say Arnold. Guess he wasnt has important as Grant.
I wonder if the street was originally named for Benedict Arnold ... I find it wonderful the little things I notice now and which I missed before sharing a photo every day.

Perhaps Mr. Arnold's first name was Grant -- or Mr. Grant's first name was Arnold. One never knows about these civic matters.
A lot of the time, you'll see the cement contractor stamp its business name into the work. Not sure if this is the case or not. I luv your blog btw!!
After looking at your photo again, it appears that the "S" is the beginning of "Street" -- just like you imply. There was, in fact, a large-scale street-renaming overhaul during the early 1930s. Before that, things were a bit of a mess for the post office ...
