January, 2008, Theme Day: Best Photo of the Year

buds
For what seemed like an inordinately long time, these rhododendron buds stood guard at our building's front door, reminding me for all the world of a photo of those terracotta soldiers from the tomb of China's first emperor, Shi Huangdi.

I took this photo months before I became aware of the City Daily Photo Blog community. For that reason, I decided to look through the many photos I had taken prior to September 1, 2007, searching for a photo I particularly wanted to share with you. So today I begin what I plan to be my first full calendar year as a CDPBer, with this photo that I took on March 4, 2007.

I'm not sure that I can truly convey how satisfying, exciting and supportive I find the CDPB community to be for me, so I'll just say, "Thank you, from my heart."

You'll have a blast looking at all of these photos of the year, 2007:

Y'all can't believe that I could pick just one, could you? It's just that in 2008 I promise that I'm going to try hard, really hard, to overcome my Lays-potato-chips-betcha-can't-eat-just-one photo posting philosophy. I wouldn't bet on myself as far as being successful goes, though. It's just me--I talk too much, too. Oh, well.

To tell you the truth, this quote, attributed to Jack London, that JB from Mainz Daily Photo (We miss you, JB.) left in a comment explains me and my philosophy, to a T.

I would rather be ashes than dust! I would rather that my spark should burn out in a brilliant blaze than it should be stifled by dry-rot. I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet. The function of man is to live, not to exist. I shall not waste my days trying to prolong them. I shall use my time.

Nice photo, Lynette! I love rhododendrums, but for some reason, I can't get the things to grow here, so I have azaleas. Can you grow magnolias there? We planted a mini magnolia a few months ago to replace one of the trees that died in the drought this summer.

Thanks, everyone! Just to make things clear, though, I don't get to grow anything these days since we live on the 4th floor in an apartment. I do love to see it in others yards and gardens!

Nice and mysterious shot to start the year! Mysterious because I am trying to guess, by looking at those buds, which color they will be when they bloom.
Happy New Year from New York City, Lynette! May 2008 bring you lots of satisfaction and happiness, and fun with that blogging thing!
