I look at this blue, blue sky and think, "Oh, I wish that was all that was on the horizon in the Gulf of Mexico." Please join Mama and me in our prayers for the safety of everyone potentially in harm's way from Hurricane Gustav. We've been talking on the phone with loved ones in Mississippi about their preparations, and everyone is taking the situation seriously, just like they did Katrina.
This photo shows the front of the Emergency Room wall, on the right, and the top of the drive-through cover at Legacy Good Samaritan Hospital on NW 23rd, walking distance from where we live. I don't know why that smokestack is there. I mean I don't know what is in the building it is on. Does anyone know about it, please? Thanks.

A lot of hospitals have their own generators in the case of power loss. That smokestack could be for a very old style generator. An interesting photo would be a closeup of the brick stack with the blue sky background.
Hopefully this hurricane isnt as bad as they are saying it will be. Katrina brought many people to Terrell. This time I know the services in Terrell are ready. The police, fire and city are ready to help evacuees out.
That's most likely the power plant for the hospital Lynette. They may have had an incinerator at one time as well but it wouldn't be used these days.
We have almost none of these stacks left in Vancouver. They're considered too dangerous in the event of an earthquake.
We do have one and I plan to post a picture of it one of these days.
In the Pacific Northwest we are extremely fortunate in that we have almost no genuinely serious weather events. I think we need to remind ourselves of this more often.
Thanks for your notes Lynette. I think this is an old generator too. Coal/wood might be its fuel in the old days. We have such old long stacks too but not for electricity generating; They were for producing brick: brick kiln.
Hi Lynette. Can't help you with the smokestack.. but wanted to say we are praying for all in Mississippi and my beloved NOLA. I keep praying that Gustav just goes away and leaves our poor Gulf Coast alone.
