Seen outside the Rose Garden Arena, January 19, 2013

Click here for a trip to City Daily Photo, transporting you around the world every day.

Before the basketball game, I walked by the crowd lined up at various doors as the awaited the arrival of 6 p.m. These doors are the main ones at the south end of the arena. The door I use is just to the right of the right edge of this photo, maybe 12 feet away. I exit usually at the right-most of the doors in this photo where the person in the red and white jacket waits, unless I remember to go out another doorway which is usually devoid of a crowd and is also to the right of these. I don't go out the door I use as my entrance because it is a single door which opens onto a one-way ramp with a railing--a total bottleneck.

The upper level circular area is where folks who have paid to eat at the pre-game buffet because their more expensive ticket includes the food go to sit with their food. I've been there a couple of times when the Blazers had special events for season ticket holders. The view is pretty good and would be better if the grain elevators were not right across from the arena. However, I'm sure that business-wise, for the Willamette River, the grain elevators are a good thing. Can't run an economy on the whim of professional basketball.

Ah. The entry process--looking in your bag/purse after you set it on a narrow folding table, going through the metal detector, being wanded if you set off the metal detector, and having your ticket scanned--has begun. Tonight I'm on my way to a different entrance than the one I described above because I wanted to pick up my LaMarcus Aldridge NBA All-Star bobble head--the Rose Garden Arena season-ticket-holder help center is at the north end of the arena, so I decided to go get it before heading for my seat.

You can see the folks at the tables in the eating area on the second level. I'm sure it has some sort of official name, but I can't remember for sure. The first time I went up there for a season ticket holder event, I ate juicy and tender roasted buffalo, carved from a huge hunk of meat and placed onto my plate by the server.

By the way, the smoking balcony which I find troubling because of its proximity to my season ticket seat and the way the hall between me and the bathroom fills with cigarette smoke, especially at halftime, is beneath the pointed roof you see in the second photo. When it's time to renew my tickets next season, I'll be looking for somewhere else on the south end of the arena, somewhere affordable and away from that smoking balcony. I've complained several times when the smoke has come out into the arena so that I could smell it at my actual seat. The floor manager to whom I gave my info said to complain every single time I feel that the smoke is overwhelming. Well, if I didn't have to wait for him out in the smoke, I'd certainly be doing that!

The Missed Call and our All Star, LaMarcus Aldridge

DSC_0524p

LaMarcus Aldridge and Kevin Durant, 7.2 seconds on the clock, the questionable call of goaltending came with 6.0 left, tied the game, overtime, Blazers lost, January 6, 2012, the Rose Garden. This is not goaltending. Rotten ref. I took this photo from my seat at the other end of the arena.

The story of two photos, pure amazement and serendipity for me!

Monday night, December 26, the Trail Blazers played Philadelphia in our season opener. Fans and those whose employment depend upon the games taking place, as well as the players and coaches, feel pretty good about basketball being back in Portland.
DSC_0620p
Lots of Trail Blazer fans count #12, LaMarcus Aldridge, as their favorite player.

One of the photos in this short, short story is this one that I took from clean across the entire arena of LaMarcus Aldridge as he scored. Totally excited to get it!

When I decided to post the photo, I searched on Google for trail blazers philadelphia december 26, 2011. And I come across photos from the game taken by the Oregonian, Portland's daily newspaper. Lo and behold, the very first photo I saw is of the same instant of action, taken by the photographer (Bruce Ely) sitting on the floor at the baseline--you can barely see him on the right edge of my photo because I cropped close to LaMarcus and the basket. (More about that at the bottom of the post.)

If you click on the link, you'll see the second photo in this short, short story. And be amazed.

To tell you the truth, I did the search hoping to find the photo and a word or two about who had passed the ball to LaMarcus and if this was one of those lob passes like I'm pretty sure I remember it was. Anyway, the caption beneath Ely's photo was no help, but I was very excited to see the action from his perspective, let me tell you! Please click on the link above or here to see Ely's photo. I would have tried to copy and paste it onto the blog, but I didn't feel that would be the right thing to do. One of these days maybe I'll contact him for permission, if this happens again!

Here I've I cropped the photo differently so you could see Bruce Ely. Look at that other camera and lens standing in front of him!

Look where I got to go on St. Patrick's Day! Third Quarter

DSC_0247p
Pre-second-quarter torture. That's six-foot-eleven-inch Marcus Camby continuing to be the human pretzel.

DSC_0279p
LaMarcus dunks!

DSC_0285
These white things make a lot more noise than you'd think they would. I wonder if they really distract the guy at the free throw line?

DSC_0304p
Gerald blocks the ball.

DSC_0311p
Nic goes around the Cavalier. He passed the ball a second later.

DSC_0321p
Six-foot-five-ince Wesley Matthews drives. Did he pass it to the ever-ready-and-waiting Andre Miller, there on the baseline? Or did he shoot? He shot, but that photo's too blurry. It didn't go in and stay in, drat it.

DSC_0338p
Gerald takes the charge for the Blazers. See him there on the far left?

DSC_0339p
Gerald went to the floor. How they do this and jump right up and keep on playing, I'll never understand.

DSC_0400p
Time out in the third quarter. Time for on-court entertainment! Break dancing, if I remember right.

Score at the end of the third quarter, Blazers 89, Cavaliers 45.

Look where I got to go on St. Patrick's Day! Second Quarter

DSC_0571p
A bit blurry, but here's what's happening. Six-foot-two-inch Cleveland Cavalier Daniel Gibson puts his hand in the face of six-foot-inch Portland Trail Blazer Patrick "Patty" Mills. Patty's the one who originated the the three goggles nickname. He's also He is one of the first Indigenous Australians to play basketball in the NBA. We love him here in Portland!

Patty's the three goggles!

Time out. Blazer Dancer. Can't remember the song.

LaMarcus scores! I know because in the next shot caught the net moving just after the ball fell through it!

DSC_0041p
Rudy steals the ball! Rudy steals the ball!

Rudy gets away from the Cleveland guy!

Rudy's almost there!

Rudy goes up for his shot!

Made basket! Rudy's on the way back to play defense. Yea, Blazers!

Stunt Team.

Everyone landed safely!

Hilarious shot of one of the Blazers TV guys, Mike Rice! Believe it or not, the other guy is Mike Barrett. Mike 'n' Mike!

The dreaded in ...

DSC_0150p
... and out shot. Drat! Better luck next time, six-foot-eight Nicolas Batum.

DSC_0153p
Six-foot-seven inch Gerald Wallace flies! He's our newest Blazer!

DSC_0154p
Gerald and the ball land on the floor at about the same second, it looks like. There we have another example of those blooming shorts.

The score at half time--Blazers 64, Cavaliers 34.

Come back tomorrow for the third quarter.

Look where I got to go on St. Patrick's Day! Tip-off and First Quarter

DSC_0469p
Go, LaMarcus Aldridge! Go, Blazers!

DSC_0472p
I always want LaMarcus right here, in the driver's seat.

DSC_0473p
What happens in a split second totally amazes me. Somehow--I think they're born knowing how--LaMarcus knows exactly when to pivot and shoot. He's just about there in this shot.

DSC_0474p
LaMarcus shoots! To tell you the truth, I cannot remember if it went in or not. So much happened so quickly, and I am just glad that I got this shot. Who would have ever dreamed that he had jumped up enough to cause his uniform shorts to blossom like that on his way down? Love that serendipity!

DSC_0498p
I adore Andre Miller; he's a skilled, determined competitor. Here he's certain of his shot--you can just see the ball in the net, there at the bottom rim of the backboard.

DSC_0524p
Andre's on the way! He'll either shoot or pass--there's very little that the other team can do about him.

DSC_0527p
Rudy Fernandez ran off the court after the ball. It took him a few seconds to get turned around and headed back the other way. It also took that man in the corner whose head you cannot see--just his blue-jeaned legs and left arm are visible--a few more seconds to get upright again. Seems like the man in the black shirt is about to help him.

DSC_0540p
Rudy for three!

DSC_0542p
I know that three-pointer was good! Rudy flashes the three goggles!

DSC_0552p
End of the first quarter, Blazers 37, Cavaliers 12.

Tomorrow, the second quarter.

Nine, count 'em, nine wins in a row!

tb_enhanced

Larger than life, that's how the Trail Blazers seem right now, having really and truly won nine games in a row, against all odds. I don't know the exact height of this sign, but LaMarcus Aldridge, on the left, is himself 6' 11" while Brandon Roy is 6' 6" tall, in real life. It's a message, y'all, to all Portland Trail Blazer fans--this team is for real, in town and on the road, exciting everyone who loves professional basketball.

You can read about win No. 9 right here.

UPDATE: Finally, Blogger and Safari are behaving themselves! I have taken off the other two photos.
